Inground Pool Solar Heating

Inground Pool Solar Heating

SunHeater Solar Heating System will raise the temperature of your pool water by up to 10 F (6 C). or more. It is lightweight, durable and easy to install. Water simply flows through the SunHeater's many tubes via your existing pool pump where it is heated by the sun and returned to your pool. The system can be installed on the roof of your house, shed or cabana, mounted to a rack (optional mounting kit SK43 available), or simply placed on the ground. Get the system used by hundreds of thousands of Americans, the SunHeater(TM) solar pool heating system, and save money on fuel and electricity bills, extend your swimming season by weeks, and get more enjoyment from your pool than ever before. Systems are available to suit all sizes of aboveground and inground pools.

How Well Does Solar Heating Work?

A properly sized and installed system will raise pool temperatures up to 100F during the season. You will only want to circulatewater through the solar collector when the sun is shining. When it's cloudy or rainy, solar won't work as well (and you probably won't be swimming during those times), but your water will be back up to temperature after one or two warm days.

Do I Need A Special Pump

If your pool pump is in good working condition, there shouldn't be any problem using your existing pump. A one HP pump will handle installations up to 30 feet away from the pool equipment and one story up. If the collectors are cool to touch when the water is running through them on a warm sunny day, you are getting enough flow.

Where Can I Put The Solar Collectors?

Anywhere you get at least 6 hours of full sun during the day. The longer the collectors are in full sun, the better they will work.If you are mounting the solar on an angle (like a roof or rack), the collectors should face a southerly direction.

How much will the solar system weigh when filled?

Each solar box (2 collectors) will weigh approximately 80 lbs. when filled with water. There is very little additional load on your roof especially since the weight is dispersed over a large area.

SunGrabber Systems are Constructed to with stand all outdoor conditions and are backed by 10-Year Warranties. Systems are available with pairs of 2' x 10' or pairs of 2' x 12' panels and come with a system kit that includes ball valve, check valve, vacuum relief valve, couplers, and tie-downs. Installation instructions and an owner's manual included.

The SunGrabber pool solar heating system will quickly heat your in-ground pool with free, reliable solar heat. A properly sized solar system working in conjunction with a solar blanket will provide virtually all of the heat for your pool - free!

The SunGrabber Deluxe Solar Pool Heating System can supply 100% of your pool's heating needs. The system circulates pool water through solar panels mounted on the roof and uses solar energy to warm the water as it returns to the pool. Our panels mount vertically on the roof and feature 1-1/2" headers. These large headers allow for excellent circulation through the solar panels, thereby maximizing the solar efficiency.

Our SunGrabber pool solar heating system is comprised of a base package with four panels and related hardware. Additional panels can be added to the system to achieve optimal coverage. For total solar heating, the solar panel square footage should be equal to 50% of the pool's surface area.

Your Pool

An effective pool solar heating system can be installed for almost any pool in any location. Your Sungrabber dealer is the best resource to determine the ideal installation for your individual home and pool configuration.

In addition to where you live, there are a number of factors that are considered when optimizing a solar pool heating system.

Factor 1: What is the ideal orientation for solar collectors

OrientationExplanation
SouthThe ideal orientation for your solar collectors is a south-facing pitched roof, near the pool, with enough space for mounting the required number of collectors.
WestAn installation on a west-facing roof works well for summer heating, in some installations the collector area may need to be increased.
EastEastern exposures tend to be less effective and, therefore, less economical. Increasing the collector area is the recommended approach for an eastern orientation.
NorthNorthern exposures are not usually recommended, except in certain areas of the country.

The modular nature of the solar collector makes it easy to tailor the system to a specific site. Be certain that the orientation you select is not shaded by trees or other structures. Remember, the effectiveness of a solar system is directly dependent on the amount of direct sunlight that the solar collectors receive.

Your Sungrabber dealer can work with you to identify the ideal orientation and location for your solar pool heating system.

Factor 2: What is the best inclination for the solar collectors?

SeasonInclination
Year-RoundEqual to the latitude of the installation location. For example, the collectors for an installation in Tampa, Florida would be a 27-degree angle since Tampa is located at 27 degrees latitude.
SummerEqual to the latitude minus 10 to 15 degrees.
WinterEqual to the latitude plus 10 to 15 degrees.

The inclination of the solar collectors is less important than their orientation. However, the inclination should always exceed 10 degrees to ensure proper drainage.
Factor 3: How many solar collectors will I need for inground pool?

The "rule of thumb" for sizing a solar pool heating system is 60% to 80% of the pool's surface area in solar collectors. For example, a 480 square foot pool (32 feet by 15 feet) needs 288 to 384 square feet of solar collector area.
